We reverse-engineer a commercial smartwatch stress metric by relating device outputs to concurrently recorded physiological signals. Using controlled tasks and free-living data, we examine contributions from HRV features and movement artifacts and compare against validated stress scales. The analysis clarifies construct coverage and limitations, offering guidance for research use of consumer stress indicators.
