Abstract
Dementia poses a significant global health challenge, particularly for primary care systems. In Germany, primary care physicians (PCPs) play a pivotal role in the management of patients with dementia (PwD), yet innovative research approaches are needed to enhance care quality. This dissertation presents findings from various stages of the DemTab Study, a cluster-randomized controlled trial evaluating a tablet-based intervention to improve guideline-based dementia care in primary care settings. Three manuscripts were published as part of the research. The first outlines the study protocol, emphasizing methodological rigor. The second reports on recruitment, showing a 5% PCP participation rate and identifying research networks as the most effective recruitment strategy. The third manuscript reveals a 71% overall adherence to the German S3 Dementia Guideline among PCPs and a significant association between higher adherence and the number of PwD treated, though no link was found between guideline adherence and PwD quality of life. The findings highlight the need for pragmatic trial designs, the integration of PCP perspectives throughout research processes, and a closer examination of specific areas within dementia care to enhance implementation and effectiveness.
