Jan-Niklas Voigt-Antons is Professor of Computer Science (Immersive Media) at Hamm-Lippstadt University of Applied Sciences and Director of the Immersive Reality Lab. He studies how virtual and augmented reality systems can be measured and built so that they work for the people using them.

Medium — for a session page · 90 words

Jan-Niklas Voigt-Antons is Professor of Computer Science (Immersive Media) at Hamm-Lippstadt University of Applied Sciences and Director of the Immersive Reality Lab. Trained as a psychologist and as an engineer, he pairs EEG, eye tracking and physiological sensing with extended reality deployed in hospitals, public space and safety-critical training — measuring what questionnaires cannot capture. He co-developed ITU-T Recommendation P.812 on subjective test methods for interactive virtual reality, has led more than twenty funded projects, and was previously a senior research scientist at TU Berlin and at Telekom Innovation Laboratories.

Long — for a press release · 198 words

Jan-Niklas Voigt-Antons is Professor of Computer Science (Immersive Media) at Hamm-Lippstadt University of Applied Sciences, where he directs the Immersive Reality Lab, and a guest researcher at TU Berlin. His route into the field was unusual: vocational training in data technology, then a Diplom in psychology, then a doctorate in engineering. That combination defines the work. He asks how immersive and interactive systems can be designed and evaluated so that they improve experience quality, task performance and trust — and answers it by pairing EEG, eye tracking and physiological sensing with systems deployed outside the laboratory, in hospitals, in public space and in safety-critical training. His five research lines run from spatial interaction and Quality of Experience through psychophysiological measurement to digital health, learning and generative AI in media contexts. He co-developed ITU-T Recommendation P.812 on subjective test methods for interactive virtual reality and has contributed to standardization at ITU-T, MPEG and DIN. He has raised third-party funding continuously since 2015, supervises doctoral researchers in projects of their own, and is regularly asked to speak outside computer science — by medical societies, care providers, public administrations and, most recently, a United Kingdom government foresight programme on immersive technologies.
